Saint Paul RiverCentre/Xcel Energy Center is an almost 1.3 million square-foot event venue in Saint Paul, Minnesota. As an NHL hockey arena, convention center, and historic auditorium, this complex greets over 2 million visitors per year for a wide range of events. SPRC/XEC has been working since 2009 to become a regional leader in sustainable operations, and has integrated a range of programs that reduce waste, save energy and water, and promote the use of renewable energy technologies. The facility currently purchases over 9 million kWh of renewable energy per year, in addition to having an 82 kW on-site solar electric array that generated 63,000 kWh in 2013.
As part of the facility's commitment to renewable energy, they have also engaged many events in purchasing wind power to offset the energy use of their meeting, concert, or other event at the venue. This has provided an educational platform to teach about renewable energy, while increasing the proportion of facility energy use that is actually covered by renewable energy. The program has facilitated a great partnership between event, venue, and energy utility that can provide a model for others to follow.
