Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, which provides legal services worldwide, is committed to fostering a culture of sustainability, including the purchase of renewable energy credits. Sutherland currently has a green power commitment to cover all of its energy use. "Sutherland actively aims to reduce the environmental impact created by everyday business in our offices," said Tom Warren, Sutherland's Sustainability Partner. Tom is also a member of the Energy and Environmental Practice Group and chair of the firm's Energy Projects Team. Sutherland's sustainability initiative began with firm personnel discussing examples of wasteful practices at the firm. After collecting data and determining what improvements could be implemented, Sutherland's sustainability committee formally announced a firm-wide sustainability initiative on May 13, 2009. Among its many sustainability endeavors, Sutherland has adopted energy-efficient lighting, an award-winning commute alternatives program, and paper-reduction targets. The firm's "Do One Thing Differently" campaign challenges attorneys and staff to modify one aspect of their behavior every two weeks in order to build a more sustainable culture, both within the firm and their daily lives. Sutherland is a leader in the ABA-EPA Law Office Climate Challenge, a voluntary program that encourages law firms to improve energy efficiency, use renewable energy and reduce paper consumption.
