Partner Profile
The Port Authority is committed to reducing energy use and dependence on fossil fuel-generated power to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, increase electric supply diversity, and reduce operating costs. The Port Authority’s Sustainability Policy explicitly addresses the problem of global warming and ensures that the agency maintains an aggressive posture in its efforts to reduce GHG emission within the region; the Port Authority will continue to use its best efforts to reduce all GHG emissions related to its facilities, including tenants and customers, by 80% from 2006 levels, by 2050. The majority of these reductions will come from improvements made through new capital investments and changes in operations (e.g., lighting and HVAC system upgrades; fuel switching/renewable energy). In addition to projects installed/performed at Port Authority facilities, the agency employs indirect strategies for reducing its emissions – including, for example, purchase of carbon credits, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), and other tools. The Port Authority uses indirect strategies only to augment reductions achieved through capital investments and changes in operations. As part of the Port Authority Sustainability Policy, Sustainable Design Guidelines and Sustainable Infrastructure Guidelines have been adopted "to reduce adverse environmental impacts of the design, construction, operation and maintenance and occupancy or leasing of new or substantially renovated buildings and facilities, reconstruction projects, and programs." The policy applies to both Port Authority and tenant capital projects.
