The Taft School is a private, coeducational boarding and day school located in Watertown, Connecticut, on a 220-acre campus with a student body of 565. Since 2010, Taft has procured all of its energy from green sources through renewable energy certificates (RECs) to reduce the carbon footprint of campus facilities. A 13 KW on-site solar installation also supplements the purchased energy. Green power is an important part of the school’s mission, as is energy efficiency. The school heavily monitors energy usage through an intensive automated system that allows for energy curtails as needed during high demand periods. All school lighting has been changed to CFL or LED. Taft also participates annually in the Green Cup Challenge energy reduction competition as a way of bringing energy use education to the entire community.
