| Partner Profile Yahoo! takes a 360 degree approach to advancing sustainability both inside and outside the organization. This includes inspiring consumers to increase their sustainability, leading in green data center innovation, empowering employees with opportunities, and increasing energy efficiency on campuses around the globe. In 2011 Yahoo! received LEED Gold certification for operations & maintenance of the headquarters campus in Sunnyvale, California, LEED Silver for operations & maintenance of the data center in La Vista, Nebraska, and LEED Gold for commercial interiors in Bangalore, India. In October 2010, Newsweek named Yahoo! as one of the top ten environmental, publically traded companies in the U.S.. Yahoo! has invested in alternative energy sources in a variety of its offices. Its Lockport, NY data center facility uses hydropower, and 100% outside air economization. As a result, this facility consumes at least 40 percent less energy and uses at least 95 percent less water than conventional data centers. At its Santa Clara location, the company purchases up to one-half of the annual output of one large-scale wind turbine, or 1.6 million kilowatt-hours annually. The environmental benefit of a purchase this size is equivalent to removing 212 cars from the road per year. The clean renewable energy is derived from new wind and solar generation sources in California. "In order to encourage our users to take action, we need to walk the talk. Our support for green power is one of many activities we've undertaken to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability," said Chris Page, Director, Climate and Energy Strategy. | |
