Partner Profile Since 1971, when we opened our very first store in Seattle, to today with nearly 17,000 stores around the world, Starbucks Coffee Company has always been committed to doing business responsibly and conducting ourselves in ways that earn the trust and respect of our customers and neighbors. We call this Starbucks" Shared Planet" — our commitment to doing business responsibly. Energy use makes up roughly 80 percent of our directly controlled carbon emissions. That makes it our single biggest impact on the climate — and our single biggest opportunity to make significant improvements. Purchasing renewable energy and supporting green power are two important measures we are taking to reduce our contribution to climate change. Currently, 25 percent of the energy in our company-operated stores comes from renewable sources. Looking ahead, our Starbucks" Shared Planet" goal is to increase our purchases to 50 percent by 2010.
