Aquatic Animal Production Industry
Guidance for Aquatic Animal Production Facilities to Assist in Reducing the Discharge of Pollutants

Concentrated Aquatic Animal Production (CAAP) facilities are point sources under the Clean Water Act and are subject to NPDES permits. They are analogous to Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). We refer to them as "aquaculture," although not all aquaculture facilities are CAAPs under the regulation. For our purposes, "aquatic animals" means all life stages of fish, molluscs and crustaceans. The rule applies to facilities that produce 100,000 pounds or more of aquatic animals per year. This document will help permit writers develop wastewater discharge permits and producers comply with the requirements for their facilities. Fact sheet about this guidance.
