- Federal Reference Methods - EPA Federal Reference Methods (FRM) are used to measure compliance with National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for criteria air pollutants. ORD conducts research to develop and evaluate methods as potential FRMs. Details of Federal Reference Methods
Models
Exposure Model for Individuals (EMI)
The EMI is an air pollution exposure model for individuals in cohort health studies. The EMI is being developed to predict individual exposures for multiple air pollutants from ambient concentrations, meteorology, and questionnaire information such as building characteristics, occupant behavior related to building operation, and time-activity patterns. The overall goal of this research is to provide a modeling tool to enhance the ability to conduct air pollution human exposure assessments with greater certainty. This research is being conducted in response to the needs of numerous air pollution cohort health studies. The EMI applications for client-specific needs will serve to strengthen the science behind regulatory decision-making on setting the National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Details of EMI
Physiological and Anatomical Visual Analytics 1.0 (PAVA v1.0) - PAVA v1.0 is a Web-based application used to generate and animate dosimetry (chemical or biological time-course) data on a human anatomy. PAVA v1.0 requires, as input, the output of a variety of physiologically-annotated data sources, such as experimental (epidemiological, whole-body auto-radiography, tissue-specific protein expression) or modeling-based time-course data (physiologically-based pharmacokinetic model output). PAVA v1.0 accepts text-based data formats from any modeling package or data directly from the literature, and couples it to an intuitive, easy-to-use organ selection menu. PAVA v1.0 then transforms, processes, and renders the data in either of two graphical representations (1) physiological matrix format, and (2) animated-GIF format. Details of PAVA version 1.0
Positive Matrix Factorization 3.0 (EPA PMF 3.0) - EPA PMF is a receptor model being developed and freely distributed by ORD. The model uses ambient measurements and estimated uncertainties in those measurements to infer emission sources likely impacting a monitor and by how much. The solution is based on a constrained weighted least squares approach. The software has a graphical user interface (GUI) that makes entering data and viewing modeling results easy. The current versions of EPA PMF (versions 1.x) solve the relatively simple bilinear model. Details of Positive Matrix Factorization 3.0
Unmix 6.0 - EPA Unmix is a receptor model that is freely distributed by ORD. The model uses ambient measurements to determine the number of source types and their impacts at a monitoring site. The Unmix algorithm is based on defining feasible solution space for the input data. This space is derived using edges or sample groups with relatively low impacts. These edges define source types which account for the majority of variability in the data. The software has a graphical user interface (GUI) that makes entering data and viewing modeling results easy. Details of Unmix 6.0
Stochastic Human Exposure and Dose Simulation Multimedia Model version 3, aggregate residential model (SHEDS-Multimedia v3) - SHEDS-Multimedia version 3 is a physically-based, probabilistic exposure model for residential exposure scenarios. The model estimates distributions of exposures in human populations and uncertainties in the estimates through a two-stage Monte Carlo approach. Running the application requires the SAS software; it has an optional graphical user interface (GUI). A simple dose estimating model is included in the model, but the exposure results can also be output and used in other dose estimation models such as ERDEM, described in the next entry. Details of SHEDS-Multimedia version 3
Exposure Related Dose Estimating Model (ERDEM) - ERDEM is a physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model with a graphical user interface (GUI) front end. Such a mathematical model was needed to make reliable estimates of the chemical dose to organs of animals or humans because of uncertainties of making route-to route, low-to-high exposure, and species-to-species extrapolations when there are exposures to one, or to multiple chemicals. Details of Exposure Related Dose Estimating Model
Databases
- Human Exposure Database System (HEDS) - an integrated database system that contains chemical measurements, questionnaire responses, documents, and other information related to EPA research studies of the exposure of people to environmental contaminants. Details of Human Exposure Database System
- Consolidated Human Activity Database (CHAD) - contains data obtained from pre-existing human activity studies that were collected at city, state, and national levels. CHAD is intended to be an input file for exposure/intake dose modeling and/or statistical analysis. Details of Consolidated Human Activity Database
