Aging and Susceptibility to Environmental Stressors

The goal of this research is to improve our understanding of exposure and dose for chemical and biological stressors in the aging population. Human Exposure and Atmospheric Sciences Division scientists and collaborators will work to identify key chemical and biological stressors in the older adult population and to compile extant information on exposures to these agents.  Physical activity, activity pattern and physiological data will be compiled for older Americans as these may affect exposures and susceptibility. Changes in physiological parameters that result from aging will be used in physiologically-based pharmacokinetic models and the importance of model parameters will be evaluated.  Exposure, activity, and pharmacokinetic information will be used to extend existing human exposure and physiologically-based pharmacokinetic models to aging populations for use in risk assessment.  Information will be provided for incorporation into an Exposure Factors Handbook for older adults.
