J. Craig Potter

Biography

The U.S. Senate unanimously has confirmed J. Craig Potter to be Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Potter, from Cheyenne, Wyo., served from 1981 until July of last year with the U.S. Department of Interior, first as a special assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks, then for two years as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, and finally as the Acting Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks. He was the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation from July 1985, until he joined EPA as a consultant in October.

At Interior, Potter was responsible for crafting a clean air program within the National Park Service and has been closely associated with Interior's efforts to preserve wetlands and participate in lake liming demonstration projects as part of their acid rain research efforts.

"I am pleased Craig Potter is joining our team at EPA," said EPA Administrator Lee M. Thomas. "He is a talented administrator with all the skills necessary for this important position. These will serve him well in administering our national air and radiation policies."

As head of EPA's air and radiation programs, Potter will be responsible for setting and enforcing standards for national ambient air quality, hazardous air pollutants, new source performance standards and those for the prevention of significant deterioration of air quality. In addition, he will administer standards for mobile sources (vehicles and aircraft), and establish and enforce national radiation standards.

Potter is a graduate of the University of Illinois and the University of Wyoming College of Law. He has practiced law in Cheyenne, and has served with the U.S. Senate Post Office and Civil Service Committee, and from January 1978 to March 1981 with the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Potter is the son of Harriet Louise Potter currently of Sacramento, Calif., and is married to the former Louise Carter, daughter of C. Read and Elizabeth Carter of Baltimore, Md. The Potters live with their son, Spencer, in Alexandria, Va.

He was confirmed by the Senate on Friday, February 7, 1986.
