Marvin B. Durning

Biography

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Douglas M. Costle today announced that Marvin B. Durning, 48, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as EPA's new Assistant Administrator for Enforcement.

Durning was formerly a partner with the Seattle, Washington law firm of Durning, Smith and Brucker which specialized in business, corporate and environmental law.

Durning's principal responsibilities will be to enforce EPA's regulatory authorities for air, water, toxics, pesticides, noise, radiation and solid waste. He also serves as the principal advisor to the Administrator in matters pertaining to the enforcement of standards for environmental quality.

Durning was a founding partner in the Durning, Smith and Brucker law firm, established in 1964. He has also been associated with the firm of Little, LeSourd, Palmer, Scott and Slemmons of Seattle and with the Washington, D.C. law firm of Cox, Langford, Stoddard and Cutler.

Durning is a graduate of Dartmouth College (1949) summa cum laude. He received his M.A. at Oxford University in 1952 as a Rhodes Scholar, and his L.L.B. at Yale Law School (1959) cum laude.

Born in New Orleans on June 21, 1929, Durning has served as an officer in a number of environmental and other public service organizations. In 1965 he was named the "National Conservationist of the Year" by the National Wildlife Federation. The Durnings have three children and currently reside in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
