Biography

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Russell E. Train today announced the appointment of George R. Alexander, Jr., 44, as the Agency's Region V Administrator in Chicago, effective March 8, 1976.
Train also announced the appointment of Francis T. Mayo, the current Region V Administrator, as Director of the Municipal Environmental Research Laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio.
"These new assignments are designed to strengthen the administration and management of the Agency," Train said. "George Alexander received the first mobility assignment under our new executive development program--a move which brought him to headquarters from our Dallas regional office in 1974. I expect that his new assignment in Chicago will provide our Regional operations with fresh and aggressive leadership."
Alexander currently serves as Deputy Director of the Office of Regional and Intergovenmental Operations at EPA Headquarters in Washington, a position he has held since 1974. From 1972 to 1974 he was Deputy Regional Administrator for the Agency's Region VI, headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In 1974 he received the Bronze Medal for exceptional service to the Agency.
Prior to joining EPA in 1972, Alexander was Executive Vice President of Continental Life Insurance Co.; Vice President and General Counsel of the Rio Grande National Life Insurance Company; and conducted a private law practice.
He holds BBA and JD degrees from Southern Methodist University and is a member of the Texas and Kentucky Bar Associations. Alexander is married and currently residing in Alexandria, Virginia.
