Biography

The appointment of Arthur Winston Bush, a professor of environmental engineering at Rice University in Houston, as the Environmental Protection Agency's Regional Administrator for Region VI, with headquarters in Dallas, was announced today by William D. Ruckelshaus, EPA Administrator.

Ruckelshaus said that Busch, 45, former chairman of the Environmental Science and Engineering Program at Rice University, will be "a distinguished addition" to EPA's roster of Regional Administrators.

"Mr. Busch's great technical expertise coupled with his interest in protecting the environment ensure effective leadership for EPA's programs in the Southwest," Ruckelshaus stated.

Busch will begin his new Regional Administrator duties on January 1. As Regional Administrator, Busch will be responsible for all EPA programs in air and water pollution control, noise abatement, solid waste disposal, pesticides and radiation regulation in five States: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

Busch, who has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Texas Technological College and a master's in sanitary engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the author of over 60 technical papers and of a new book entitled "Aerobic Biological Treatment of Waste Waters."

He received the certificate of merit from the American Chemical Society in 1952 and was the co-recipient of the Harrison Prescott Eddy Medal for noteworthy research from the Water Pollution Control Federation in 1961.

A national director and member of the Executive Committee, Environmental Division, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Busch was appointed to the President's Air Quality Advisory Board in July, 1971.

Busch, his wife, Elray, and their two children, live in Houston.

With the appointment of professor Busch, EPA has now completed the selection of its ten regional administrators. The other nine Regional Administrators previously named are: Francis T. Mayo, Region 5, with headquarters in Chicago; John McGlennon, Region 1, Boston; Jerome H. Svore, Region 7, Kansas City, Missouri; Gerald M. Hansler, Region 2, New York City; John A. Green, Region 8, Denver; Jack E. Ravan, Region 4, Atlanta; Paul DeFalco, Jr., Region 9, San Francisco; James L. Agee, Region 10, Seattle; and Edward Furia, Region 3, Philadelphia.
