Daniel W. McGovern

Biography

EPA Administrator Lee M. Thomas has named Daniel W. McGovern to be the new Regional Administrator for EPA's Region 9, headquartered in San Francisco. He succeeds Judith E. Ayres, who resigned in December.

McGovern served from 1986 until this appointment, as General Counsel of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the U.S. Commerce Department. From 1981-85, he was Deputy and Principal Deputy Legal Advisor and Acting Legal Advisor to the U.S. State Department. He served from 1973-81 as a senior research attorney to the California Supreme Court and from 1971-73 as a California Deputy Attorney General.

Thomas said, "Dan McGovern has the legal and management experience to effectively administer and enforce our environmental laws. He will be a great asset to EPA and we feel fortunate to have him joining the agency."

McGovern, age 45, holds a law degree from the UCLA School of Law and pursued graduate studies in philosophy at UCLA and in English literature at the University of California at Berkeley.
