Environmental Management for Bureau-Wide Schools Seminar, September 21-23, Albuquerque, NM

2011 Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools National Symposium and Pre-Symposium Tribal Workshop - January 12, 2011, Washington, DC

EPA recently hosted the 11th annual Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools National Symposium in Washington D.C. The symposium was held from January 13 to 15, 2011 with a special Pre-Symposium Tribal Workshop held on January 12. The symposium brought together nearly 500 people from across the country with diverse backgrounds to discuss the most innovative and up to date best practices for improving and sustaining good indoor air quality within our nation's schools.

Mansel Nelson lead the Pre-Symposium Tribal Workshop that was designed to prepare tribal participants to get the most out of the 2011 IAQ Tools for Schools National Symposium, as well as provide information and guidance on tailoring the IAQ Tools for Schools program to tribal communities. Attendees were able to hear firsthand real success and challenges of implementing a Tribal IAQ management program, as well as provide their own experiences. The workshop was able to provide an atmosphere of sharing, networking and learning.

The IAQ Tools for Schools program was established in 1995 and is a comprehensive resource to help schools maintain a healthy environment in school buildings by identifying, correcting and preventing IAQ problems. For more information please visit, www.epa.gov/iaq/schools

Tribal Leaders Focus on IAQ at EPA's National Asthma Forum

Tribal leaders from across the country discussed indoor air quality issues in tribal communities at the Environmental Protection Agency's 2010 National Asthma Forum, held June 17-18, in Washington, D.C. Besides networking with EPA Regional and Headquarters representatives, leaders also learned about the resources available on the newly updated IAQ Tribal Partners Program website — from case studies of successful, inspiring IAQ management programs to culturally specific tribal materials — that raise awareness, increase the impact of their outreach and facilitate communication between diverse tribal communities. The Tribal Partners Program also highlights other upcoming events as a way to further the conversation about indoor air quality and its effects on tribal homes. Read more about the Asthma Forum.
