Public Notice: Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, De Soto, Kansas
Summary
Site Permit Renewal Update
This notice provides an update on the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant permit renewal.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved modification of the permit issued to Sunflower Redevelopment LLC (SRL) and the U.S Army at the historic Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in De Soto, Kansas.
EPA issued the permit under the authority of the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments to the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Based on SRL’s demonstration that all necessary cleanup activities have taken place in a portion of the facility, EPA approved the requested modification to remove those areas of the property from the permit. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment provided oversight of the cleanup activities and supported the permit modification.
The modification only applies to a portion of the property, and cleanup will continue on those areas still subject to the permit. Additionally, groundwater across the entire property, including the area removed from the permit, will be addressed as part of that future work.
For additional information about the property or the permit modification, please contact the EPA project manager, Mary Grisolano, by phone at 913-551-7657, toll-free at 1-800-223-0425, or by email at grisolano.mary@epa.gov.
