Columbia University
Columbia University is currently planning its new Northwest Science
Building. The 188,000-square-foot, 14-story academic facility will
house seven floors of laboratories focused on interdisciplinary
research intersecting biology, chemistry, and physics. The facility,
which will be constructed over an existing gymnasium, will also
include a scientific library, large lecture hall, and cafeteria.
Columbia will begin construction in 2007, and plans to start occupying
the building by 2010.
Designing the building to achieve LEED® certification,
Columbia is including numerous sustainable design features such
as variable air volume fume hoods and dedicated process water cooling
loops. With the support of Labs21, the design team also hopes to
incorporate occupancy sensors on fume hoods and improve the energy
efficiency of the heat recovery systems.
Columbia University, located in New York City, was founded in 1754
as King's College by royal charter of King George II of England.
More than two and half centuries later, it has grown to include
three undergraduate schools, 13 graduate and professional schools,
a school of continuing education, and has become world renowned
for its research in medicine, science, the arts, and the humanities.
