Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is constructing a
state-of-the-art Molecular Foundry Laboratory, one of five Nanoscale
Science Research Centers within the U.S. Department of Energy. Once
completed, scientists from university, industry, and government
laboratories worldwide will take advantage of the facility's unique
technology and equipment for research related to fabricating nanoscale
patterned materials. LBNL has set a number of important sustainable
design goals for the project, including achieving a Silver or better
LEED® rating. Sustainable features include the installation
of energy-efficient chiller and boiler plants, controls reset temperature
and pressure adjustments in the HVAC air and water systems to minimize
energy use, and efficiency specifications for the building's fan
filter units. A robust building commissioning effort will also play
an integral role in achieving aggressive energy efficiency targets.
LBNL is using the project to pilot test the Labs21
Environmental Performance Criteria.
The lab is registered with the U.S. Green Building Council. Registration
and certification is courtesy of a $57,000 Model Program grant from
DOE's Departmental Energy Management Program.
New! LBNL Wins Federal Energy and Water Management Award
On October 5, LBNL was awarded a 2006 Federal Energy and Water
Management Award. Learn more
about this Labs21 Partner's outstanding contributions to energy
and water conservation efforts in the federal sector during FY 2005.
LBNL, the oldest of the national laboratories, is managed by the
University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy. LBNL
is a multiprogram laboratory where research in advanced materials,
life sciences, energy efficiency, detectors, and accelerators serves
America's needs in technology and the environment. For more on this
