University of California, Merced
The University of California-Merced is constructing a new 166,000
square-foot Science and Engineering building. This will be the first
of three academic buildings that will be constructed for the opening
of the campus in 2005. The university has set a number of aggressive
goals for the facility. These include reducing the measured energy
intensity of the laboratory to 80 percent of similar UC laboratory facilities,
and achieving a minimum LEED® silver rating or equivalent.
LEED is a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council
to evaluate and facilitate the sustainable design of a given facility.
UC Merced will apply what is learned from this project to other
sustainable design efforts. Specifically, they will attempt to:
1) further reduce energy intensity for subsequent laboratories;
2) meet sustainable goals for other UC Merced buildings; and 3) assist
other UC and California State University campuses in achieving similar
levels of performance. This will help make the university a model
for environmental stewardship and sustainable design.
Scheduled to open in 2005, UC Merced will bring the University
of California's historic commitment to excellence in teaching, research,
and public service to the state's San Joaquin Valley. The university
is using the latest sustainable, environmentally-sensitive techniques
in all of its campus and community planning. To learn more about
