State University of New York at Oswego
The State University of New York at Oswego (SUNY Oswego) has begun schematic design for a retrofit project in its undergraduate Science, Engineering, and Technologies Building. The project includes renovation of up to 70,000 existing square feet, and an additional 150,000 square feet of new construction, which will eventually house physics, biology, computer science, and chemistry studies that include a blend of soft, high, wet, and dry laboratory space.
The project is currently tracking to achieve LEED® Gold status, and the design team is considering a number of sustainable design features encouraged by Labs21. Specifically, the building will feature a greenhouse on the roof, and designers are considering renewable energy options, including wind power, solar panels, and geothermal energy systems. Labs21 plans to be of particular assistance here in advising how laboratory operations would function if these systems were incorporated into building design. The design team hopes to incorporate a "lessons learned" approach into this facility so that they can maximize its efficiency.
The goal is to complete schematic design by the beginning of summer 2009, and construction is expected to start in 2010. In addition to LEED Gold certification, the project aims to be at least 30 percent better than ASHRAE 90.1.

More than 8,000 students are enrolled at SUNY Oswego, which was founded in 1861. The lakeside campus features nearly 45 buildings with classroom, laboratory, residential, and athletic facilities. In 2006, the university launched a $250 million campus-wide renovation and renewal program, spearheaded by the addition of a new Campus Center —the college's first new building in 35 years. SUNY Oswego is one of 13 colleges in the SUNY system.
