Through research, tools, partnerships, case studies, grants, and technical assistance, EPA is helping America's communities turn their visions of the future into reality.

EPA has joined the Partnership for Sustainable Communities with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U. S. Department of Transportation to help improve access to affordable housing, more transportation options, and lower transportation costs while protecting the environment in communities nationwide. EPA has selected 56 communities in 26 states to receive technical assistance through the Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities program.


The application period is now open for the 11th annual National Award for Smart Growth Achievement. The deadline is April 6, 2012. Click here to learn about the award program and to download the application form.


On December 1, EPA recognized exemplary projects in five communities across the country with the National Award for Smart Growth Achievement: St. Louis, Missouri; Albuquerque, New Mexico; El Paso, Texas; Howard, South Dakota; and Normal, Illinois. Read the White House blog.


On Nov. 17, HUD, DOT, EPA, and USDA released Supporting Sustainable Rural Communities, a report highlighting how small towns and rural places across the country are using federal resources to enhance economic vitality and protect the environment.
