- Founded in 1955, the American Academy of Environmental Engineers is dedicated to excellence in the practice of environmental engineering to ensure the public health, safety, and welfare to enable humankind to co-exist in harmony with nature. The Academy confers accredited certification to qualified licensed professional engineers (Board Certified Environmental Engineer) and non-P.E. licensed environmental engineering practitioners (Board Certified Environmental Engineering Member) in eight specialty areas: Air Pollution Control, Environmental Sustainability, General Environmental Engineering, Hazardous Waste Management, Industrial Hygiene, Radiation Protection, Solid Waste Management, and Water Supply/Wastewater Management. The Academy counsels state legislatures and federal agencies on the proper application of engineering credentials. It is also the lead agency for ABET, accrediting environmental engineering programs at colleges and universities nationwide and internationally.
