- Baltimore County has one active sanitary landfill, as well as several closed sites. In the mid-1990s, SCS Engineers evaluated their landfill sites in regard to the feasibility of LFG recovery. As a result, in 1997, the county initiated a procurement process for an LFG developer to design, construct, and operate an LFG facility, incorporating the existing well field, blower station, and flare facility at the Eastern Sanitary Landfill Solid Waste Management Facility. A lease agreement was eventually executed in October 2002; at present (2010), the lessee is Eastern Landfill Gas (ELG), an affiliate of PEPCO Energy Systems. In September 2006, a generating facility consisting of three reciprocating internal combustion engine driven generatators (with room for a fourth) began operation. Based on a flow of 800-1,100 scfm, the facility has been producing 2-3 MW of electricity which is placed into the local electrical grid.
