Description: Columbus County is located in southeastern North Carolina with a population of ~54,000. The county opened a MSW landfill in the New Hope community in 1973. The unlined landfill closed in 1996 with 1.25 million metric tons of waste in place, and generating ~694 cfm LFG. The county is participating in the CommunityTIES (Trash into Energy Savings) program through Appalachian State University Energy Center. The program seeks to find beneficial uses for the methane being produced at the landfill.
