- The first project utilizing LFG as energy was a 3.2 MW engine generator plant that became operational on 1/1/91. A second 3.2 MW engine/generator plant became operational on 1/1/93. The third project, direct thermal use in the Noman Cole WWTP, became operational on 1/1/97. LFG is used to assist in the incineration of municipal sewage sludge, replacing natural gas. Flow to this use is load dependent and varies from .3 mmscfd to 2.01 mmscfd. In March 2005, five standard natural gas infrared heaters (3 units at 80,000 BTU/hr each and two units at 100,000 BTU/hr each) were retrofitted and installed in the maintenance building of the I-95 Landfill. These units replaced two existing 250,000 BTU/hr propane-fired forced air heaters.
