Description: La Crosse County has an integrated solid waste management system of recycling, reuse, resource recovery, and land disposal services. The Department's solid waste management system is consistent with the State of Wisconsin's waste management hierarchy. This includes source reduction and reuse, recycling and composting, modern waste to energy (WTE), landfilling, and incineration without energy recovery. La Crosse County offers several diversion programs at the landfill to reduce the amount of material thrown away. These programs include recycling of asphalt shingles, using clean waste wood as a biofuel for the WTE facility run by Xcel Energy, processing of concrete and asphalt materials, management of impacted soils, and a nationally recognized household hazardous materials facility for private and public use. WTE is an important part of their regional approach to waste management.
