Description
Murray City Power, a municipal utility serving the community of Murray, Utah, has a 105-MW load powered by hydro, coal, natural gas, and LFG. In 2005, Murray partnered with Salt Lake Valley Landfill and Landfill Energy Systems to develop the first significant LFG energy project in Utah: a 3-MW facility that went online July 2006. The success of the project motivated Murray to pursue an agreement for power at a second landfill site near Murray, partnering with Trans-Jordan Landfill and Granger Electric. The 4.5-MW Trans-Jordan project began producing power in April 2009. As qualified renewable energy generators, these two projects integrate perfectly with Murray's other resources. The combined projects provide energy to serve the equivalent consumption of 6,700 Murray households and operate at an impressive 94% capacity. Murray's catalytic role in these projects is one of many ways the utility proactively demonstrates its commitment to environmental stewardship.
