Description: The City of Northampton operates the 50,000 TPY Northampton Landfill on a 50-acre site located at 170 Glendale Road in Northampton, MA. The facility has operated since June of 1969, with 1.6 million tons of refuse in place, a maximum depth of 90 feet, and 39 acres under refuse. In 1990 the City opened expansion areas for 4 new lined cells with disposal capacity to operate through the year 2012. There is a gas collection system in place which consists of an enclosed flare (2008), collection mains, and numerous gas collection wells. The City has a long-term contract with Ameresco to install and operate a 0.8 MW electrical generation system which became operational in 2008. The DPW is in the process of obtaining authorizations to construct and operate an adjacent 50-acre parcel which has the potential for an additional 21 years of disposal capacity. Site assignment and site suitability are completed for this expansion. More generation capabilities are expected with this expansion.
