- Prince William County owns and operates a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill in Independent Hill, VA, approximately 30 miles south of Washington, DC. Landfilling began in 1968, and to date we have landfilled about 5 million tons of MSW. Presently the landfill accepts about 800 tons per day, and the "landfill life" is anticipated through at least 2050. United Gasco/Minnesota Methane (UG/MM), a LFG developer, owns and operates a 1.9 MW landfill gas energy facility (LFGE) at the site. The LFGE facility started up in 1998 and presently consists of about 90 extraction wells and 2 reciprocating internal combustion engines. UG/MM has plans to install additional engines in the near future. Excess LFG is controlled in an enclosed flare.
