Description
Southeastern Chester County Refuse Authority (SECCRA), a municipal authority formed in 1968, provides a regional waste management solution for municipal solid waste planning in southern Chester County. SECCRA's current landfill is located in London Grove Township on PA Route 926, between Routes 841 and 41. The SECCRA Community Landfill is relatively small by today's standards, accepting about 450 tons per day of trash from local municipalities. The landfill does not accept waste from outside its service area, nor from out of state. In the past, smaller landfills were overlooked for their potential for electricity generation due to the proportionately larger capital costs and relatively smaller gas generation potential. Currently, SECCRA POWER is in full operation, and is producing almost a megawatt of power from the LFG generated at the SECCRA Community Landfill. Since the project began, recorded methane gas flow rates are in excess of the current capacity for which one engine/generator set is rated. The development of Phase II and the addition of a second engine/generator set will occur in 2008 to convert the maximum amount of methane gas to produce the maximum amount of "green electricity" possible. The project is financially sustainable, and has surpassed expectations.
