- Starting in May 2011, LFG will fuel electricity generation at Watauga County's closed landfill using two automotive engines with a combined rated capacity of about 195 kW. After adjusting for the lower energy content of LFG, the generators are expected to produce about 900 MWh of electricity per year during the next ten years which is enough electricity to power about 25 homes. Accompanying the interconnection of the generation system is a consolidation of the County's electricity accounts at the landfill, which will allow the generators to serve the demand load for the Sanitation Department. The excess electricity will be sold to Blue Ridge Electric. The Technology Department of Appalachian State University is designing a heat exchange system to utilize the waste heat from the generators to supplement the heat used in the maintenance shop and the car wash bay.
