Standard cubic feet
per minute (scfm)
= Million standard cubic
feet per day (mmscfd)

Standard cubic feet per
minute (scfm) of LFG
= Megawatt (MW)
capacity

Assumptions:
Methane content of LFG is 50%
Methane heat content is 1,012 Btu/scf methane
Weighted average heat rate for LFG-fired engines, turbines, and boiler/steam turbines is 11,700 Btu/kWh
Amount of LFG in scfm is the amount of LFG available for utilization

Standard cubic feet per
minute (scfm) of LFG
= Million Btu per hour (mmBtu/hr) or
decatherm per hour (decatherm/hr)

Note:
1 mmBtu/hr = 1 decatherm/hr
Assumptions:
Methane content of LFG is 50%
Methane heat content is 1,012 Btu/scf methane
Amount of LFG in scfm is the amount of LFG available for utilization

Tons of waste-in-place
(WIP)
= Standard cubic feet per
minute (scfm) of LFG

Assumption:
300 scfm of LFG is available for utilization for every million tons of WIP

Tons of waste-in-place
(WIP)
= Million standard cubic feet
per day (mmscfd) of LFG

Assumption:
300 scfm of LFG is available for utilization for every million tons of WIP

Tons of waste-in-place
(WIP)
= Megawatt (MW)
capacity

Assumptions:
300 scfm of LFG is available for utilization for every million tons of WIP
Methane content of LFG is 50%
Methane heat content is 1,012 Btu/scf methane
Weighted average heat rate for LFG-fired engines, turbines, and boiler/steam turbines is 11,700 Btu/kWh

Tons of waste-in-place
(WIP)
= Million Btu per hour (mmBtu/hr) or
decatherm per hour (decatherm/hr)

Note:
1 mmBtu/hr = 1 decatherm/hr
Assumptions:
300 scfm of LFG is available for utilization for every million tons of WIP
Methane content of LFG is 50%
Methane heat content is 1,012 Btu/scf methane

% methane = Btu per standard cubic
feet (Btu/scf) of LFG

Assumption:
Methane heat content is 1,012 Btu/scf methane

Megawatt (MW) capacity = Million kilowatt-hours per
year (million kWh/year)

Assumption:
Net capacity factor of 0.85 accounts for availability, operating load, and parasitic losses of generating unit(s)

Acres of landfill waste = Number of LFG
collection wells

Note:
Assuming an average waste density and depth for a typical landfill acre containing municipal solid waste, it is estimated that an LFG collection well will recover approximately 10 to 30 standard cubic feet per minute (scfm) of LFG.
Assumption:
Ratio of LFG collection wells to acres of landfill waste is 1 (i.e., 1 well per acre)

Short tons of methane = Million metric tons of carbon
dioxide equivalents (MMTCO2E)

Assumption:
Global Warming Potential (GWP) for methane is 21

Short tons of carbon
dioxide
= Million metric tons of carbon
dioxide equivalents (MMTCO2E)

Million metric tons of
carbon dioxide
equivalents (MMTCO2E)
= Million metric tons of carbon
equivalents (MMTCE)
