Public Notice: Oronogo-Duenweg Mining Belt National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site, Jasper County, Missouri
Summary
Site Boundary Expanded to Include All of Jasper County
The boundary of the Oronogo-Duenweg Mining Belt National Priorities List (NPL) Superfund Site (site) has been expanded to include all of Jasper County, Missouri.
EPA, the state, and local partners identified the presence of contamination in surface soil and groundwater from historic mining activities throughout the county – including Carthage, Sarcoxie, and other areas – beyond EPA’s original site boundary that covered Joplin, Webb City, Oronogo, and the western side of the county. The site boundary expansion will allow EPA to conduct long-term cleanup actions that are necessary to protect human health and the environment. (See map at right.)
EPA solicited public input about the proposed boundary change starting in 2023. For more information, visit EPA’s April 2023 Fact Sheet and March 2024 Memorandum.
Lead is a toxic metal that is harmful if inhaled or ingested and can pose serious health risks, particularly to children under 7 years old, as well as pregnant women and nursing mothers. For information on how to protect your family from lead hazards, visit EPA’s website.
