ORD/NHEERL/Gulf Ecology Division Library Services

This is a specialized research library for the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL) in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

The Gulf Ecology Division (GED) is responsible for research on the physical, chemical, and biological dynamics of coastal wetlands and estuaries, to determine ecological condition, evaluate rates and causes of declining systems, and predict future conditions under various alternative water quality scenarios. The GED Library supports the research and administrative functions of the laboratory by providing a wide range of information services and by maintaining an extensive resource collection.

Hours of Operation

The Library is open from 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM CST, Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays.

Borrowing Policy and Interlibrary Loans

Borrowing privileges are limited to EPA staff and other libraries.

To locate EPA library and repository materials, you can search the Online Library System (OLS), EPA Libraries’ online catalog.  If you have any questions, please call or e-mail the library.

Information For Other Libraries: We freely share materials with other libraries via the OCLC Interlibrary Loan system. Our OCLC symbol is EKC and we are members of FEDL (Federal Libraries and Information Centers), PLAN (Panhandle Library Access Network), and FLIN (Florida Library Information Network). For libraries that do not have OCLC access, please contact the Librarian at (850) 934-9318 for alternate methods.

History of the Library

The Gulf Ecology Division library is located in a Creole style cottage built in the early 1900s. 

The building originally served as the physician's residence when the Pensacola Quarantine Station occupied the island from 1906 to 1925. 

The facility was expanded in 1979 by enclosing a side porch and again in 1992 by adding a room to the back. Enclosed floor space now measures approximately 1,450 square feet.
