EPA Grants $3 Million for Chemical Toxicity Research

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded nearly $3 million to better understand how the liver responds to environmental toxicants. Four academic institutions, including Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, will develop ways to enhance what society knows about environmental contaminants and the liver, the body’s waste treatment organ. EPA Improves Access to Information on Hundreds of Chemicals, Searchable databases on chemical toxicity and exposure data now available

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is making it easier to find data about chemicals. EPA is releasing two databases—the Toxicity Forecaster database (ToxCastDB) and the database of chemical exposure studies(ExpoCastDB)—that scientists and the public can use to access chemical toxicity and exposure data. New Robot System to Test 10,000 Chemicals for Toxicity

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Computational Toxicology Research Program, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences National Toxicology Program, the NIH Chemical Genomics Center and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration unveiled a new high-speed robot screening system that will test 10,000 different chemicals for potential toxicity. The robot system marks the beginning of a new phase of an ongoing collaboration, referred to as Tox21, that is working to protect people's health by improving how chemicals are tested in this country. EPA and European Chemicals Agency Sign Agreement to Enhance Chemical Safety

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) Exit EPA Disclaimer have announced a partnership that will promote enhanced technical cooperation on chemical management activities. The partnership is part of EPA's commitment to improve chemical safety. ECHA is the agency that implements the European Union’s chemical management program known as REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals). EPA will provide ECHA regulatory data (excluding confidential business information) from its Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention Office and research from its Toxicity Forecaster (ToxCast). In return, ECHA will share the approaches and chemical data being used under the new Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) that was enacted in June 2007. EPA Screens 1,000 Chemicals Using ToxCast

ToxCast has entered a new phase, screening 1,000 chemicals for potential toxicity to people and the environment. ToxCast is designed to determine how chemical exposures impact human biological processes and how the chemicals most likely lead to health effects. When fully implemented, ToxCast will be able to screen thousands of chemicals in fast, cost-effective tests that are relevant to human health. Transatlantic Chemical Toxicity Testing Partnership

EPA's Computational Toxicology Research Program is partnering with the European Commission Joint Research Centre, Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP), to exchange research materials and results useful for the development of integrated methods for predicting chemical toxicity. EPA's CompTox research, through ToxCast™ , is generating toxicological profiles of hundreds of reference chemicals using a comprehensive array of automated high throughput screening assays. ToxCast fits well with the work program of the IHCP's chemical safety area, where efforts are focused on the design and evaluation of integrated testing strategies for predicting chemical toxicity, by combining chemical-grouping approaches, computational modeling and in vitro testing. EPA and Other Federal Agencies Collaborate to Improve Chemical Screening

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the National Institute of Health Chemical Genomics Center (NCGC) welcome the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to the Tox21 collaboration. The Tox21 collaboration merges federal agency resources (research, funding and testing tools) to develop ways to more effectively predict how chemicals will affect human health and the environment.

EPA's CompTox program compared eight of the 14 oil spill dispersants for their relative potential to be harmful to human health and the environment.

The first round of tests used fast, automated screening tests from EPA’s Toxicity Forecaster (ToxCast) and the Tox21 federal partnership with the NIH Chemical Genomics Center, to compare each dispersant’s potential for endocrine activity and relative toxicity to living cells. EPA Opens Access to Chemical Information

Searchable database on chemical hazard, exposure and toxicity data now available. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is making it easier to find chemical information online. EPA is releasing a database, called ToxRefDB, which allows scientists and the interested public to search and download thousands of toxicity testing results on hundreds of chemicals. NCCT Announces Public Release of ToxCast Phase I Data in Conjunction with Publication of Major ToxCast Overview Paper. (12.14.09)

A paper titled "In Vitro Screening of Environmental Chemicals for Targeted Testing Prioritization – The ToxCast Project", describing the first phase of ToxCast has just been published in Environmental Health Perspectives. ToxCast aims to evaluate the use of in vitro assays for understanding the types of molecular and pathway perturbations caused by environmental chemicals and to build initial prioritization models of in vivo toxicity. The collection of data generated by ToxCast Phase I is now posted on the EPA ToxCast web site: http://www.epa.gov/ncct/toxcast.

$3.2M Awarded to the University of Houston for a Comp-Tox Developmental Toxicity Center (8.19.09)

EPA has awarded $3.2M to the University of Houston to develop a virtual developmental toxicity research center with Texas A&M and the University of Indiana. The Texas Indiana Virtual STAR (TIVS) Center will contribute to the evolution of more reliable chemical risk assessments by developing high throughput in vitro and in silico screening models of developmental toxicity. The models will use zebrafish embryonic stem cells to analyze the effects of toxic chemicals on the developing embryo. Read the full article.

Scientists Convene to Discuss New Method to Study How Toxic Chemicals Impact Human Health (5.29.09)

More than 200 scientists, regulators, and policy makers from around the world convened recently at EPA's first ToxCast™ Data Analysis Summit to discuss results of the first phase of ToxCast™. ToxCast™ is an innovative approach for profiling how chemicals in our environment impact important biological pathways that are critical for the function of the body's systems such as the heart, lungs, brain or reproductive organs. New and Improved DSSTox Structure Browser for Chemical Analog Searching (8.12.09)

The DSSTox Structure Browser v2.0 includes a number of new features to facilitate flexible text (Chemical Name, CAS) and chemical structure searching through 11 published DSSTox Data Files, currently spanning over 6000 chemical structures. New to the Browser are External link-outs based on chemical structure to public resources that include: PubChem, ChemSpider, Lazar In Silico Toxicology, and soon-to-be-activated, ACToR. NIH Collaborates with EPA to Improve the Safety Testing of Chemicals (2.15.08)

New Strategy Aims to Reduce Reliance on Animal Testing
Testing the safety of chemicals ranging from pesticides to household cleaners will benefit from new technologies and a plan for collaboration, according to federal scientists from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who today announced a new toxicity testing agreement. The concept behind this agreement is highlighted in the Feb. 15, 2008 issue of the journal Science. Read more

Computational Toxicology Implementation Plan

ORD's Computational Toxicology Research Program Implementation Plan lays out the rationale and short to medium term objectives of the research program in computational toxicology. The plan discusses the three main components of the program, and details the research issue and relevance, experimental approach, progress to date and milestones over the next three years for each.
