Improving Risk Analysis Approaches Used by the EPA

The NAS committee, Improving Risk Analysis Approaches Used by the EPA, reviews aspects of risk analysis.  It released a new report on fall of 2008 Science and Decisions: Advancing Risk Assessment, which is considered an update to the 1983 Risk Assessment in the Federal Government: Managing the Process, or the “Red Book,” which established a framework for risk evaluations.

Scorecard’s Web site uses EPA data to provide information on environmental quality at the community-level.  Information includes pollutant releases to the environment, water quality, and presence of Superfund sites.  An environmental justice analysis is also available by county.

Envirofacts is a searchable database that provides environmental quality information at the state and county level.

IRIS compiles data on specific substances found in the environment and their potential to cause human health effects.

EnviroMapper Storefront

EnviroMapper Storefront is a visual mapping database that is part of the Envirofacts data warehouse.  EnviroMapper Storefront houses ten tools on environmental quality information.

National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)

NPDES is a permit program to control water pollution by point sources that discharge pollutants into waters.  The NDES program includes a mapping tool to locate NPDES sites.

National Air Toxics Assessments (NATA)

NATA is EPA’s ongoing comprehensive evaluation of air toxics using a state-of-the-science screening tool to estimate the risk of cancer and other health effects from breathing air toxics.

TRI Explorer generates information about toxic chemical releases by ZIP code.  Data is compiled from the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI).

National Priority List is a list of national priorities among the known releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants for the U.S.   The NPL program includes a mapping tool to locate NPL sites.
