| Tour: | SERC Tour Description
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is situated on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay, south of Annapolis, Maryland and 25 miles east of Washington, D.C.; it is part of the coastal plane physiographic province. SERC owns a 2700-acre site that comprises wetlands, forests, subestuaries, agricultural lands, and residential and commercial development. Research on various aspects of human interactions with the natural environment has continued on the site for more than 35 years. Thursday afternoon you will have the opportunity to tour research sites devoted to watershed monitoring, wetland ecology, as well as instrument towers, and estuarine sampling sites (by boat). SERC scientists conducting the research will accompany the
tour to explain their research and answer questions. Charles
Gallegos, a CISNet grantee and scientist at SERC has graciously
offered to arrange this tour. Participation is not required,
but it is encouraged. Please let us know if you plan on attending
the tour when you register. For more information on the center
and the area, including directions, please visit the SERC
website at: http://www.serc.si.edu/ |
