Purpose: The U.S. EPA is holding the 2nd National EPA Nonindigenous Species Workshop in February. The Workshop is jointly organized by ORD laboratories and centers (ORD’s National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory, National Center for Environmental Assessment, National Center for Environmental Research, National Exposure Research Laboratory, and National Risk Management Research Laboratory, EPA’s Office of Water), Office of International Affairs, Office of Pesticide Programs, Great Lakes National Program Office, and EPA Regions 5 and 10. The first National EPA Nonindigenous Species Workshop held in 2000 focused on raising awareness of invasive species as ecological and human health threats. Since that time, the almost daily reports of outbreaks of new exotic species have erased any question as to whether invasive species constitute one of the major environmental threats of the 21st Century. Accordingly, the 2nd Workshop shifts focus to identifying EPA’s “niche” in invasive species research and management, or “Can you hear us now?”

Additionally, in Fiscal Year (FY) 2000, the U.S. EPA National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) funded a set of research grants through a Request for Applications (RFA) entitled “Exploratory Research to Anticipate Future Environmental Issues.” This competitive solicitation was divided into three parts, one of which focused on biopollution. The resultant grants, funded through the Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program, cover a range of research issues focused on invasive species, both terrestrial and aquatic. To monitor the progress of its grantees, NCER holds a progress review at select points during the life of the funded projects. The progress review for this set of grants is being held in conjunction with the ORD-sponsored 2nd National Nonindigenous Species Workshop, where the grantees will present their results on the first day.
