STAR Grantee Chosen as Special Lecturer

Dr. Michael Stein has been chosen as a 2004 Medallion Lecturer for the Institute of Mathematical StatisticsWASHINGTON (NCER) - Dr. Michael Stein has been chosen as a 2004 Medallion Lecturer for the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. This August, Dr. Stein will talk about the work he is doing for EPA’s Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grants program at a meeting in Toronto, Canada. The Joint Statistical Meeting will take place on August 8 –12, 2004 and is held jointly by the American Statistical Association, the International Biometry Society, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the Statistical Society of Canada. Medallion lecturers are chosen by the Committee on Special Lectures at the Institute of Mathematics from four areas: probability, theoretical statistics, applied statistics, and interdisciplinary. The meeting is the largest gathering of statisticians held in North America and is usually attended by more than 4,000 people.

Dr. Stein was also invited to give the Rustagi Memorial Lecture at Ohio State University on May 27, 2004. His presentation, “Statistical Models for Processes Varying in Space and Time,” described exploratory methods suitable for spatial-temporal processes observed at a set of fixed monitoring locations.

Dr. Stein is the director of the STAR Center for Integrating Statistical and Environmental Science at the University of Chicago. His research is developing new statistical methods to address environmental problems and integrating statistics throughout the process of risk assessment. Specific research problems at the Center include investigating the relationship between air pollution and respiratory illnesses, statistical design and analysis for estimating trends in environmental indicators, approaches to combining numerical models and statistical methods, quasi-experimentation to assess the relationship between infant mortality and particulate air pollution, and the development of stochastic models and model selection procedures for complex ecological systems.
