STAR Grantee Serving as Committee Chair
Dr. Terry Gordon is an EPA Science To Achieve Results (STAR) grantee working on health issues related to Particulate Matter (PM) and other inhaled pollutants. He was recently appointed as Chair of the Threshold Limit Value for the Chemical Substances Committee for the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). The committee is one of the oldest and most prominent developers of occupational exposure limits in the world with a mission “to recommend airborne concentrations of agents and exposure conditions for use in the practice of industrial hygiene and by other qualified professionals to protect worker health.” The committee is made up of distinguished experts, many of whom hold doctorates in related fields. Dr. Gordon is a Professor of Environmental Medicine at New York University and Director of the Inhalation Facility in the Department of Environmental Medicine. He is also a past president of the Inhalation Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology.
EPA has been involved with Dr. Gordon’s work since the late 1990s through a number of research grants. He is presently a principal investigator on a grant addressing the health effect of nanotechnology entitled, “Role of Particle Agglomeration in Nanoparticle Toxicity.” Agglomeration is the buildup of smaller components around a larger central entity and, in this study, he is investigating the adverse health effects as these single carbon nanoparticles draw in others over time to form larger and possibly more toxic compounds.
Dr. Gordon has received funding for two other STAR grants, “Mechanism of PM-Induced Acute Health Effects” and “Genetic Basis of the Increased Susceptibility of Children to Inhaled Pollutants” as well as being an investigator with the EPA-funded NYU School of Medicine PM Center.
Dr. Gordon has received a National Research Service Awards Fellowship from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI); New Investigator Award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; and a Research Career Development Award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
