New STAR Grant Award in Region 3
Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA

Pennsylvania State University will receive nearly $900,000 in grant funding from the EPA to develop a unique analytical method for prediction of climate and land cover change impacts related to the functional performance of freshwater wetlands. This grant is one of seven that will be awarded in response to a request for applications called "Nonlinear Responses to Global Change in Linked Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems and Effects of Multiple Factors on Terrestrial Ecosystems".

Researchers at Pennsylvania State University will characterize nonlinear responses to global climate change in linked aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Specifically, scientists will characterize various global change scenarios, identify potential nonlinear ecological responses in the selected ecosystem as a result of these changes, and estimate the resulting change in ecosystem services on a watershed and Basin-wide scale in the Susquehanna River Basin. This method for predicting climate and land change impacts could be applied to a wide variety of aquatic ecosystems for which changes occur over either a spatial or temporal extent, or both.
