| Purpose: | The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 8, will hold
a regional science training workshop on ecosystem services in the context
of watersheds. The workshop will bring EPA Office of Research and
Development (ORD) scientists, EPA regional staff, Utah state agency staff,
and their partners together to explore how the valuation of ecosystem
services can be applied to the protection and restoration of wetlands. During
the workshop, participants will review their understanding of the environmental
significance of wetland ecosystems, their functional attributes, the
factors that make them vulnerable, and the implementation of programs
created to sustain and restore the wetlands of the Great Salt Lake.
The first part of the workshop will focus on a technical review of nutrient issues from the newly formed Farmington Bay Nutrient Science Panel. Special emphasis will be placed on the consideration of market-based approaches for attaining environmental goals. The desired outcomes of the workshop are to: (1) develop an inventory of science needs for the evaluation of wetland ecosystem services; (2) draft an outline of the research plan necessary to support regional and state program needs; (3) develop an informal advisory committee for the Great Salt Lake Wetland Alternative Futures Project; (4) incorporate the workshop outcomes into EPA’s Ecological Research Program; and (5) provide technical input on Farmington Bay open water nutrient issues. This workshop is open to the public. |
