The National Sustainable Design Expo, featuring EPA's P3 (People, Prosperity and the Planet) Award competition, supports teams of college and university students who compete to design and build sustainable technologies. Government, nonprofit, and for-profit organizations also exhibit their sustainable technologies, designs, and ideas during the Expo. Both the National Sustainable Design Expo and P3 Award competition on the National Mall in Washington, DC, are free and OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

During the Expo, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) judges all P3 projects for their technical merit, innovation, and more. EPA then chooses the teams that receive P3 Awards and Honorable Mentions. Winners are announced at the P3 Award ceremony after the Expo ends. P3 Award winners receive additional funding to continue developing their designs so they can take them to the marketplace or implement them in the field. The awards ceremony is also open to the media.

The P3 competition and awards are sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Other organizations periodically give awards to P3 teams. Additional awards from previous years are available in the Media Information Archive.
