Title: Eco-Friendly Golf Tees Filled with Corn-Based DDGS
Northern Illinois University students will develop a process for incorporating a by-product of the ethanol industry into the manufacture of plastics. Currently this by-product, distiller dried grains with solubles (DDGS), is used in animal feed, but with the growth of the ethanol industry there is going to be an influx of DDGS. Based on previous research done at the university, the students will create a golf tee that has DDGS as at least 1/3 of its mass. Incorporating this material into plastics will help reduce the negative impacts of oil-based plastics.
