Title: Development of Source-Separation Latrine Technology for Sustainable Human Waste Management in Rural Ghan
A team of students from Columbia University are evaluating the feasibility of source-separation latrine technology in Obodan, Ghana and educating the community on its benefits through a pilot project. They will modify the latrine design, pending feedback, and implement additional latrines. The current latrine facilities in Obodan are overused and cannot accommodate the entire community. Source-separated latrines separate urine from fecal matter at the toilet seat, thereby reducing the quantity of harmful pathogens in solid waste, and leading to safer and more sanitary waste storage. Collected liquid waste can be decontaminated and used as agricultural, providing revenue to the community.
