Title: Optimizing the Biosand Filter for Drinking Water Treatment in Developing Countries
A team of students from Lehigh University are developing biosand filtration units that smaller and less expensive than existing ones in order to meet the needs of a larger global market. The concrete biosand filter (BSF) is an attractive water treatment option in developing countries because it produces high quality drinking water, is durable, and is easy to use and maintain. However, they are too costly for the poorest households and the weight of the concrete filter has been difficult and cumbersome to transport. Modifying the BSF technology to make it accessible to a broader population will reduce the incidence of waterborne diarrheal disease and increase the productivity and earning capacity of the average household.
