Title: Sustainable Accommodations for Communities in Need: Providing Affordable, Sustainable and Portable Housing for Developing Nations

The 2010 earthquake in Haiti left more than one million people homeless, including thousands of orphans. Members of Engineers for a Sustainable World at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are retrofitting end-of-life shipping containers with solar power, rainwater collection and temperature control to provide a comfortable daycare center and medical clinic for orphaned children and their community. Their design utilizes abandoned containers that can be found sitting in shipping ports to make modular structures that are both portable and expandable with limited effort. The students’ efforts expand beyond Haiti, striving to establish shipping containers as the standard of housing and development for urban and impoverished communities around the world.
