Title: Evaluation of Chitosan and Chitosan - Ag Electrospun Membranes for Lead And Bacterial Removal From Potable Water of Puerto Rico

At least the 79% of the population of Puerto Rico has consumed drinking water that does not meet the quality standards established by the local and federal regulations. Students at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez are designing and evaluating a new material for home treatment systems. They are looking at using Chitosan, a natural material that comes from the shells of shrimp and crabs, to remove heavy metals and bacteria. Their design has the potential to become a low cost, efficient, reusable and biodegradable water filter that is more effective than current materials.
