NHEERL Scientist To Support EPA Former Weapons Scientist Research Program
NHEERL’s Mace Barron will travel to the Republic of Tajikistan in early May 2011 in support of the EPA Office of International Activities Biochem Redirect Program for retraining former USSR biological weapons scientists. Dr. Barron, who is Chief of the Gulf Ecology Division’s Biological Effects and Population Response Branch in Gulf Breeze, FL, will be accompanied by Oksana Manzenyuk of the International Science and Technology Center, Moscow, Russia. This project will investigate legacy pesticides and other contaminants in food stuffs in areas of Tajikistan. The purpose of this site visit is to assess progress, procedures, and facilities associated with the sampling, storage, and analysis of food stuffs. The trip also will include a visit to one of the sampling locations, as well as identifying potential reference areas. The project is being led by Mukhamadsho Kukaniev of the Nikitin Institute of Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan in Dushanbe.
