WED Scientist Invited To Attend ICES Benthic Ecology Working Group Meeting
Dr. Walter Nelson of NHEERL’s Western Ecology Division (WED) will be attending the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Benthic Ecology Working Group meeting hosted by the Smithsonian Institution Field Station, Fort Pierce, FL, May 2-5, 2011. ICES coordinates and promotes marine research on oceanography, the marine environment, the marine ecosystem, and living marine resources in the North Atlantic. Members of the ICES community now include all coastal States bordering the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea, with affiliate members around the Mediterranean Sea and in the Southern Hemisphere. The Benthic Ecology Working Group is designed to facilitate the exchange of information among benthic ecologists in the ICES community. The meeting will consider topics relating to benthos and climate change, marine habitat modeling and mapping, and information exchange on long-term benthic datasets. Dr. Nelson will present summaries of EPA’s National Coastal Assessment for the U.S. West Coast, describe WED efforts to develop the Pacific Coast Ecosystem Information System database, and discuss WED work in marine habitat modeling.
